Media and Motion

Advertising/Media Awareness (grade 5 and up)
Here students will learn about visual forms advertising, print, television and web based media. Some basic concepts in marketing will be touched on as well as discussion on styles, some legal matters and targeting an audience. Students will learn about the parts of an ad, logos, branding, tag lines, body copy, disclaimers, illustrations or photography including photo manipulation. They will then have an opportunity to design an ad for a magazine.
Systems and Motion (grade 5 and up)
In this presentation, students are introduced to real world applications of gears, levers, and pneumatics.  Examples of mechanical motion are explained using photographs, short video clips and samples of various projects that include:
Mr. Pibbs - a radio controlled robot puppet built for the movie “Zoom”
Full size elephant – designed and built for the Movie “Love Guru”
Walking Trex -a 6 foot dinosaur skeleton automaton built for the American Museum of Natural History.
Microraptor test model – designed, built and tested in the Wright Brothers wind tunnel at MIT for a PBS NOVA documentary.
Plus, other props and various industrial design projects.
Content of this presentation can be tailored to suit existing class projects and reinforce concepts learned in the classroom or be used to kick off a course of study.
Dinosaurs in Motion (All ages)
This presentation focuses on two dinosaur projects,
Walking Trex -a 6 foot dinosaur skeleton automaton built for the American Museum of Natural History.
Microraptor test model – designed, built and tested in the Wright Brothers wind tunnel at MIT for a PBS NOVA documentary.
Using Photographs, video and physical samples of the project, a complete story of how information was gathered endeavoring to accurately reproduce the movement using information available from some of the leading experts in their fields.
